Who the Heck am I

Welcome to my blog, I ran out of storage space on my last blog so instead of purchasing more space I decided to start another.

Photographing is one of my biggest passions in life. I've been a photographer for 20+ years. Although I have sold some of my work I consider myself an advance amateur. Which means I'm pretty good at pretending to know what I am doing. I arrived from Massachusetts to Northern Kentucky September 16, 2001. I hated it, for months I complained about living here, besides all the redneck jokes I would get there was nothing about Northern Kentucky I enjoyed, when I got over myself I dusted off my camera and headed for the hills, literally, I never fully understood what a beautiful place this is until I was given my first digital camera as a Christmas gift. In all honesty you couldn't get me to move out of this state.

Living so near to Cincinnati (I live right across the river) no other city can offer me more. Art museums, Cincinnati Zoo, symphony, theatre, aquarium, amusement park, Dozens of parks, one of the largest and most amazing firework display in the country and so much more. If you are from the area you know what I am talking about, if you're not, believe me when I say In and Around Northern Kentucky is worth the visit.

I know you will want to check out my other blog, I have shot photographs at the Behringer-Crawford Museum, Cincinnati Museum Center, Cincinnati Zoo, Creation Museum, Eden Park, Findlay Market, Fountain, Square, Krohn Conservatory, Rabbit Hash, KY, Railway Museum, Smale Park, Spring Grove Cemetery and much more. Just click on the link below.

Hanging Out Waiting For The Disaster Crew

I headed to a building right across the river in Cincinnati, I had to photograph the inside of the building that had damage from the storm we had this afternoon, anyway while waiting for the disaster crew to show up I took a couple of photographs, one of what seemed to be an empty building that was unusually placed in the parking lot, the other is obvious, just a different perspective of the city.

Smale Park

I did a little video of the park the last time I was there.

103 Degrees

This is what 103 degrees looks like around the cabin. Ummmmm maybe it's more of a touchy feely thing. LOL This is as far as I went outside today. Just having some heat wave fun.

When the wind kicks up this is what I worry about falling on the cabin. It can be a little unsettling.

A New Destination

One of the best things about reading other local blogs is that once in a while you stumble upon a good place to photograph. This weekend I'm heading to Loveland via back roads to visit....well lets just say its abandoned. I'm going to have to make it an early road trip to try to beat the heat, yes I'm a whiner, I think we established that already. :-)

101 Degrees...Say What? Update Now 104 Degrees

After today life in Northern Kentucky is going to, their is no other way to say it, SUCK! Tomorrows temperature may actually reach an all time high of 103 degrees, every day in the future will be in the mid to upper 90's. I will admit that when it comes to heat waves I do not fair well. Okay, okay I'm a total whiner. Like all of you that hate the winter my feelings are the same when it comes to heat. I'll hold up in the A/C until September if I have to. Not really but I wish I could. Why I am posting about something like this? I'm afraid that my passion for photography will take a back seat until cooler weather hits the tristate. My apologies in advance if this blog starts to lack. I have been thinking about trying some still life photography, something I can do indoors, we'll see how that goes, so until I return, could be tomorrow, could be next week, try and stay cool, drink lots of water if you're outside and don't forget the sunscreen. I almost forgot, if you know anyone, especially an elderly person who does not have A/C please check on them.

Yay or Nay?

Some local websites have been using some of my photos. This has happened to me quite often in the past year. When I find this out I always check it out to make sure that they are not making a profit off the photo. No one has yet. I really do not mind, at the moment anyway, I found out today that someone grabbed a few of my fireworks photos so off I went to the website. It was a local blog about the Cincinnati Reds, I know I'm rambling, sooooooo, one of the firework photos was not mine so I clicked on it, (I will give the owner of the blog kudos for at least linking it back to the owners) it was a cropped photo of a firework. I actually liked it so I thought I would try it as well. What do you think?
Part of the grand finale.
Not cropped enough?
To heavily cropped?

Taft Museum Reproductions Continued.

After I left the Cock & Bull Pub I headed to the Covington Library where I found this beauty.
This painting is called "The Pond" about 1844 by Pierre-Etienne-Theodore Rousseau (1812-1867) French.
The plaque read...Have you ever noticed how clear the air is after a storm? Theordore Rousseau captured the sharp edges and fresh color after a storm washes everything. The dark rain clouds are drawing away, and brilliant light strikes a puffy white cloud over the pond where two people a cow sought shelter under spreading oak trees.

After the library I headed to The Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center located in Covington
 Mr Carnegie himself.
This painting is called "A Woman with a Cittern and a Singing Couple at a Table," about 1667
Pieter de Hooch (1629-1684) Dutch.
For the Dutch in the 17th century, scenes of everyday life like this one were meant to teach and delight. This depiction of courtship can be read two ways. Music may be seen as an idle time-waster (bad) or an innocent pastime (good). Likewise, the dog may stand for either lust or loyalty. Which do you think?

Celebrating the Taft's 80th Anniversary

Today I went to Mainstrasse.......
To visit the Cock & Bull Pub.....
So I could find one of the Taft Museums Art pieces.
This is called "A Gray Day in Holland." 1899 By Jan Hendrik Weissenbruch (1824-1903)
Next to the painting the plaque reads...It may be a gloomy day, but traces of reds and blues are layered with the transparent grays. This painting both accurately reflects the soggy climate of norther Holland and becomes a timeless view of atmosphere, shadow and reflection such as we can see in the Tristate. Can you find the people on the left bank of the canal. Face all kinds of weather...

More Cincinnati Reds Fireworks 22-Jun-12

That's it for the fireworks. Next event isn't for 3 weeks. :( I've also figured out how to crop these without losing the quality. Every time you save a JPG file the quality becomes less and less. I have a program that will allow me to edit on TIFF files then converted to JPGS. Although TIFF files are very large files and will take more hard drive space it is worth it. The photos below are not cropped yet, I haven't made up my mind yet if I am going to crop these or wait until the next firework event.

A Few More From Tonights Fireworks

This is it for now, I am so tired, I still have quite a few that came out so I will post the rest in the morning. Hope you enjoy. On the left of the brighter photos you can make out the silhouette of a tree, another error I totally missed. IMO it is a distraction. I'll have to be careful the next time I am there. I did a sloppy job this time around.

Cincinnati Reds Firework Friday 22-Jun-12

Hang in there much more to come.

I made a small but obvious error on the photos above. I cut out the river all together, I'm glad I noticed it, in all honesty it just doesn't look right without at least some of the river exposed like the photo below.

Moon, Boats and the Ohio River

There was a boat load (no pun intended) of boats on the river tonight to watch the fireworks. The moon made the photo perfect. The boats are a little blurry because I did a 10 second exposure, I like it that way.

Fireworks

Heading on out to photograph some fireworks...STAY TUNED!
Sorry about the quality of this photo, it is heavily cropped. I was taking a photo of the Great American Tower which also included a part of this building. I could barely make it out but I think the guy in this photo was taunting me, I heard "hey you photographer" or something like that, since I was the only photographer around at the time I can only assume he was talking to me, then an old talent of mine came back to life, I was able to easily block everything else he said out. Goodbye annoying one. I did make sure before I left that I faced the camera right at him as though I was taking a photo of him. I wouldn't want to waste another pixel on this dork. Something tells me I forgot to take my happy pill today. LOL

Back to Smale Park

Headed back to the park again this evening. Parking was a little bit of an issue but eventually I found a free spot again. If you haven't checked this park out yet you really need to. For those of you that are not quite sure how to pronounce the name of the park...take the word mail and put an S in front of it...sounds like Smail.

You can tell by the tree it was a little breezy out tonight. I can't wait until the fence comes down, it really takes away from the photo.

I would pack it all up to move here.
Reds fan maybe?  Lets Play Ball!!!
If you look closely half way up the Freedom Center you can make out an orange light, that is a fire they have going all the time, I'm assuming (and I am not the sharpest tool in shed) that it has something to do with representing freedom. It's kinda cool.
