Who the Heck am I

Welcome to my blog, I ran out of storage space on my last blog so instead of purchasing more space I decided to start another.

Photographing is one of my biggest passions in life. I've been a photographer for 20+ years. Although I have sold some of my work I consider myself an advance amateur. Which means I'm pretty good at pretending to know what I am doing. I arrived from Massachusetts to Northern Kentucky September 16, 2001. I hated it, for months I complained about living here, besides all the redneck jokes I would get there was nothing about Northern Kentucky I enjoyed, when I got over myself I dusted off my camera and headed for the hills, literally, I never fully understood what a beautiful place this is until I was given my first digital camera as a Christmas gift. In all honesty you couldn't get me to move out of this state.

Living so near to Cincinnati (I live right across the river) no other city can offer me more. Art museums, Cincinnati Zoo, symphony, theatre, aquarium, amusement park, Dozens of parks, one of the largest and most amazing firework display in the country and so much more. If you are from the area you know what I am talking about, if you're not, believe me when I say In and Around Northern Kentucky is worth the visit.

I know you will want to check out my other blog, I have shot photographs at the Behringer-Crawford Museum, Cincinnati Museum Center, Cincinnati Zoo, Creation Museum, Eden Park, Findlay Market, Fountain, Square, Krohn Conservatory, Rabbit Hash, KY, Railway Museum, Smale Park, Spring Grove Cemetery and much more. MainStrasse Classic Car Show

I realize I haven't been around much, I've been a little under the weather. Yesterday as I was heading out to get something to eat for breakfast I took a totally different route to get there, good thing because I would have never known about the classic car show on MainStrasse. I forced myself to get out of the house into the fresh air, thankfully this event was much smaller then the Cincinnati one. I did manage to walk it all, got a few nice photos, although I have to admit I really wasn't into it as much. Hope you enjoy.

This coming weekend is the Bromley, KY  Fire Department fund raiser, with fireworks, the Reds have there fireworks this Friday. I'm going to try something new at the Bromley fair so stay tuned for that.

I almost forgot to mention that Goettafest is happening this coming weekend as well in Newport, KY. Lots to do.

I forgot to mention this as well. The longest yard sale is this weekend. Start/Finish on MainStrasse.

Bengals Pep Rally Fireworks

I'll admit I didn't really think that the fireworks would go on as scheduled. It rained the entire time. As luck would have it I met a women who was also photographing the fireworks, she had an SUV that she offered and I took full advantage of, my camera was safe from the rain, I on the other hand I got totally soaked, didn't care though. Thank you Yvonne for sharing your tailgate with me.

Because of how dark they kept the stadium Paul Brown Stadium is barely seen and unfortunately a pillar in the lower left hand corner can be, if the Bengals do this again next I will change locations. The fireworks were nice, the one difference that I liked from the Reds firework event was that in a few shots they actually fired off 6 or 7 fireworks at a time. Even with the rain it made it a nice way to enjoy a Thursday evening.

Sunset in Devou Park

Before I headed to the fireworks I couldn't believe the beautiful sunset. I was lucky enough to have caught the tail end of it. I was a little surprised that I didn't have to use my tripod.

Bengals Pep Rally

Just learned that the Bengals are having a pep rally tonight that will end with fireworks, weather permitting. Another opportunity to photograph fireworks? Do we really need to ask? Stay tuned later tonight for photos.

Covington, Kentucky

I ran on down to the post office this afternoon, thought I would bring my camera along.
 Love these steeples.

As I was heading back home I thought I would take a different route when I remembered the spaceship house. I don't know I have to keep asking myself why? If you're going to live in something this unusual why not give some info about it? Like my reasons for wanting to live in such a crazy home. Or maybe it would make a little more sense if perhaps you gave a list of the meds you're on?....Just sayin.

Even the bushes are feeling the heat, look how wilted they are.

More from the Classic Car Show

Here are the rest of the photos from the car show. You'll notice that I photographed quite a few engines as well, sometimes they were more impressive then the car itself. If you like classic cars this is a must see, there were at least 300 cars, 80% of lawn space was occupied. Plenty of food and non alcoholic drinks (alcohol not allowed in park) were available This will be on my to do list for next year as well, On a scale of 1-5 I will give this a......mmmmmm 4, just barely. Why not five? Negatives? I would like to have seen more drinks available throughout instead of just in one location, I did see a couple of ladies driving a cart with drinks in the back for sale but they only came around once. I was really hoping to see a lot more hot rods, the heat was bad, at least for me, I would have stayed longer if it wasn't for that. Some positives, parking was free the event was free. I went mid afternoon, parking was not an issue. If you parked your car on the grass majority of it was shaded.

Rollin' on the River Car Show

I don't know what you did today but I headed to the car show at Fernbank Park in Cincinnati. Classic car show that was well......a lot of fun. The photos shot are just for entertainment I wasn't trying to go all professional looking, not that I am even close to that but you get the idea, it was to difficult, first there was a ton of people always in the way, the cars were to close together and it seemed that every car I wanted to photograph from the front I had to face the sun, which always makes for a bad photo. Here are a few to start with. I will be downloading more a bit later. I enjoy photographing classic cars but I didn't take the time to write down what type of cars they were. Some may be obvious, others are well....not.

More Fireworks

Are you screaming enough with the fireworks yet? Hope not, 3 more events left. Last nights event was quite an improvement from the previous week. It was a little windy which actually made the fireworks a bit dramatic. I wasn't sure they would be setting off the fireworks at all, especially after last weeks grass fires. They did...YAY!

Mini Thunderstorm at the Cabin

I started to upload the video here when I realized that all I am doing is taking up precious storage space. Below is a link to the video on Youtube. You'll notice how windy it can get, although this was mild in comparison to other storms that we've had, I still get a little nervous. Around the 1:17 mark you'll notice a lightning strike, not to impressive at first until you see the photo that I took of it.

Click Here For Mini Thunderstorm Video

Stormy Weather

The storm was pretty good, on a scale of 1-5 I will give it a 4. Some decent lightning strikes, especially close to the cabin, I took a video of a lightning strike that hit really close, I'll upload it soon. Hehehe I can't seem to find it.
The Storm hit Northeast of the cabin first.
It was 4:30p.m. when I photographed this, hard to believe that it was this dark outside
This is the little bugger that took out our phone and internet. I apologize for how dark the two photos are, I walked back to the car to get my tripod when the fire department pulled up behind me. Thought it best to just get out of there. No doubt that this limb was struck by lightning, the winds were not high enough to cause this.

Still Here

Finally back online. I lost the internet when the storms rolled in the other day. Tonight is fireworks once again so stay tuned, I also photographed some of the storm damage, will post more later.

St. Rita's Festival

Last night we headed over to St. Rita's Festival. They raise approximately $200,000 over the weekend each year, if you like low key gambling, which there is a lot of, this is the place to go. We walked out only $5.00 ahead but it was fun. The rides were pretty lacking but that wasn't the main focus. I believe they throw in the rides to give the kids something to do while the parents gamble.

Just a Few More From Last Nights Fireworks

Cincinnati Reds Fireworks 13-July-12

Tonight we had a little more then just fireworks, the grass behind where they were shooting off the fireworks caught on fire. It took nearly 15 minutes before the fire trucks arrived. It never really was out of control, they did extinguish it quickly. Out of all the firework events that I have been to this one I am sorry to say was the biggest disappointment. Hope the next one improves.

The fire trucks already arrived however, you can still see some of the grass on fire.

Just Some Random Shots From the Other Day

I'm not sure if you are aware of this but in Newport by the BB Riverboats I believe, you can take tours of the city by helicopter. The prices start at $30.00 all the way to $295.00. I'm planning on doing this during fall foliage.  For $75.00 you get 12-14 minutes in the air.

Donated Photos

I received a request this evening to donate two of my photos to help promote the renovated Washington Park. Of course I said yes, I'm such a softy.

Remembering Hurricane Ike

It's hard to believe that nearly 4 years has past since Hurricane Ike came roaring through Kentucky. This wasn't my first hurricane, I survived Hurricane Bob in 1991 while living on Nantucket Island. Hurricane Bob had winds of up to 104mph, that hurricane was a little stressful, Ike on the other hand was terrifying. Living in the woods surrounded by trees I thought for sure we would lose the cabin and if one of the large trees came crashing down on the cabin, we could have been seriously hurt. We became trapped early on when a tree fell across the driveway, we didn't have a choice but stick it out. After it was all over and we finally cleared a path out the driveway we headed to the main part of the park. Below are some of the photos of the destruction. I hope Ike was the storm of the century, I would not want to live through another one like that, especially in the cabin.

All that aside I have to chuckle at the quality of the photos, I only had my camera for 9 months, I was still shooting jpegs in automatic mode. I think I have improved a bit since then.
